Seat: Carthage · Beckville, DeBerry, Gary, Clayton
Panola County was created in 1846 from Harrison and Shelby counties and took its name from a Choctaw word for cotton. After an early log courthouse at Pulaski on the Sabine River bluff, voters moved the county seat to Carthage in 1848 at the geographic center of the county.
The Panola County Courthouse in Carthage holds deed, probate, and pooled unit declarations dating from the county’s 1846 founding through the Carthage Gas Field era and today’s long‑lateral Haynesville Shale units.
Along US Highway 59, State Highway 149, and FM 31 from Beckville to DeBerry, generations of family farm and timber tracts sit above stacked Cotton Valley and Haynesville reservoirs.
Near DeBerry on the Louisiana line stands the 1841 granite monument marking where the Sabine River crosses the 32nd Parallel, the only surviving original international boundary marker between the Republic of Texas and the United States.
